Goa Pharmaceuticals Manufacturer’s Association (GPMA) held an interactive session titled “ Pharma Industry in Goa – Future” which primarily focused on representing challenges faced by units in Goa for their continuance as well as for their expansion programs.

The session was inaugurated in the presence of Chief Guest Shri. Arun Goyal, Principal Secretary who also holds the charge of Industries & PWD, Guests of honour Dr. Bangarurajan, Deputy Drugs Controller CDSCO(West Zone), Shri Salim Veljee, FDA Director.

Shri. Suresh Kamath, GPMA President welcomed the chief guest and other dignitaries and stressed upon the Industry’s presence in State of Goa, but its continuance is plagued by inadequate power & water supplies, shortage of skilled manpower and other infrastructure related issues. The association was taking these issues to the Government on various platforms to address favourably or otherwise which would hurt the Industry in the long run if not resolved.

He also added that Goa is the preferred destination for its overseas partners, but its expansion plans are restrained for want of land. He appealed to GIDC to identify unutilized plots near to existing units and release them for the expansion of existing units. He also suggested that the GIDC shall consider improving public transport system in collaboration with Kadamba Transport Corporation and provide hostel facilities in major Industrial Estates. He also mentioned that no major units have received import alerts/ warning letters from USFDA which is plaguing Pharma Industry in the rest of India. This shows the units in Goa are in strong compliance to current Good Manufacturing Practices (cGMP) required by USFDA and other International regulatory bodies.

Shri Arun Goyal in his address stated that Goa is a major Pharma Hub and needs to nurture in a big way for its continuance and further expansion. His tenure in Japan made him to understand the stringent requirements of quality standards to be maintained for Pharmaceuticals. He said that India is lacking in back up options on various infrastructural requirements. Japan was able to shut off all nuclear plants within few days of their major nuclear disaster and was able to switch over to alternate options. Replying to increase in tariff of electricity, he said such increases are required for continual up gradation of substations and feeder lines. He also agreed to study on supply of raw water to Industries to tide over water scarcity.

Dr. Bangarurajan in his address highlighted efforts of CDSCO (West Zone) in putting its sub zonal office in Goa for the benefit of importers and exporters. He said that steps have been taken to improve the timelines for clearance of imports which is affecting local units. He also suggested that 2D implementation on the primary packaging will be done in more phased manner to avoid difficulties to manufacturers.

Shri. Salim Veljee in his address stated that Goa has over 70 units operating for various markets. Out of this 40 are approved by either one of major regulatory bodies worldwide. This shows the strong compliance to cGMP requirements.
